Don't Read....

the more you read, the more you know
the more you know, the smarter you grow
the smarter you grow, the stronger your voice
so don't read...
Reading

Enables the mind to think over objects of interest, which enable a person in making informed decisions, its food for the soul, for it nourishes the human intellect in probing things deeper, analyzing things, and provide guidance to people, to instances they have not yet been exposed to life.

It is necessary to describe what constitutes "reading habit". Text book reading does not amount to reading habit. In fact it's reading as a hobby that makes the cut. So reading a novel, poetry, biography or books would come under the ambit of reading habit.

India has been an interesting case-study for observers of reading habits. On one hand its relatively low literacy level (65%) poses a challenge to the publishing houses or the online book stores, one can say that the Indian print industry is far away from being mauled by digital technology as has been the case in the developed nations.

Stages of Reading

The good reading habit is to be based on four stages:
  • Exploring
  • Checking the Vocabulary
  • Analyzing for Comprehension
  • Synthesizing for Understanding

Motives
  • improve the capacity to earn
  • achieve power
  • increase security
  • solve personal problems
  • experiment vicarious adventure
  • emotional excitement

Library is not a just place

Traditionally the library is looked on as a place surrounded by four walls where printed materials – some time non – print materials are stored, and lent. The library is not a place, but a process, and that mere ware – housing as servicing is only the first step in the process. The library should be a process that permeates the campus”

Survey

A few years ago a survey at Delhi University reveled that the teachers hardly read a book in a year. This is an eye opener because this is a scene of one of the Premier University of the country.
Imagine the prevailing conditions in other Universities as well as of the people who have got no access to public libraries.

National Book Trust (NBT) in India undertook a readership survey in 2009 amongst the youth (13-35 years) which showed that less than 20% said they were encouraged by their parents.

NCERT (National Council Of Educational Research And Training) survey reveals that 41% schools have library facilities.

We spend more money on movies or going to restaurant, but not on buying books. If we compare our reading habits with other countries, we find that average American reads 20000 pages a year while Indian only 320 pages.
